Giving A Helping Hand Can Be Hard
Tuesday January 27, 2009
There are many government jobs that exist to give a helping hand to vulnerable members of society, but such government jobs aren't for all. While you may be interested in the rewarding nature of such work, it comes with a lot of responsibility and many people who get into it find that they have difficulty in letting go at the end of the day. People in trouble will often not be out of trouble come 5 o'clock, so it can be hard not to let that get to you. While many people develop coping strategies, it would be naive to believe that you would remain unaffected by the nature of such work.
Do not be disheartened, however, simply be prepared. Government jobs in child protection roles and other areas can be distressing, but this is probably a large part of why you wish to be involved. Hold onto the part of yourself that yearns to make a difference to vulnerable lives and deliberately choose a difficult path. With the right mindset, you can realistically look into these kinds of government jobs and make the right decision as to whether or not they are for you.
