Benefits In Government Jobs
Friday January 23, 2009
There can be exceptional benefits to working in government jobs. While many of these benefits are not restricted to government jobs alone, they will often be harder to find in the private workforce. Also, the exact nature of the benefits available in government jobs will often depend on the level of government being served as well as the position and department. The following are many common benefits of government jobs.
Stability
Stability is a major benefit of many government jobs, at least for full time government jobs. The stability is partially due to the nature of government positions, but also due to the fact that it is rare that a government would like to increase its unemployment rates. This minimises the likelihood of unexpected dismissal and will often also mean generous redundancies will be paid in case of redundancy or similar dismissal.
Superannuation
Many government jobs come with bonus superannuation contributions from the employer. This can make overall salary packages quite competitive and access to government specific superannuation funds can be extremely useful.
Long term potential
Working in government jobs for many years can set you up with valuable knowledge that may allow you to act as a private consultant near the end of your career. Such work can be very highly paid. If you wish to stay in government jobs, though, the highest levels will often pay quite well and can even lead to travel opportunities depending on the area you work in.
