Are Government Jobs More Stable In A Recession?
Monday January 19, 2009
Government jobs are often thought of as being extremely stable even in tough economic times. The truth of the matter, however, is that the stability of government jobs in a recession will depend on the specific position. Government jobs to do with managing the unemployed will likely be quite stable, while government jobs in areas of expansion are likely to be less stable.
One advantage of government jobs when it comes to possible redundancy, however, is that they will sometimes offer good redundancy packages and offer voluntary redundancy before cutting jobs. This can sometimes allow for advancement for many people within government jobs as those who are closer to retirement will sometimes take voluntary redundancy when the packages are generous enough.
